This is just awesome stuff. I don’t think most people really appreciate just how much an inker can influence the final product in comics art.

What you have here is the pencils and published alternate cover for the second issue of The New DCU Batman. Next we have the same picture inked by Buz, Mike Mayhew, Stuart Saygar, Tim Vigil, Travis Charest, and Frank Cho.

Each of these gentlemen put a distinct touch, and feel to the art. And God Damn, do I love the Charest piece. Now I am hoping that we get a bevy of top colorists to lend some flavor to them as well.

I’ve always wanted to see something like this because it helps people understand the importance of the inker. Note how each person adds their own style on top of Jim Lee’s pencils. This is how comics work, people. It’s some artful stuff.

Also, thanks to Jason for putting this together because I saw it yesterday but didn’t want to take the time to download and repost as a photoset.

So cool seeing different inkers compared like that.

Actually I suspect you can skip the first 8 if you just do the last one.

It’s so nice to hear an author say this. I know people who buy into this idea that being an asshole and fucking up your life are requirements for being a writer, but I honestly don’t think it makes you a more interesting person, and definitely not a better writer. You might be an interesting person and/or a good writer in spite of the debauchery and demons, but never because of it.

These two are gonna be what brings me back to fan fiction, and I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
